8-9 July – 2nd Annual East Africa Transport Infrastructure Projects 2015, Nairobi, Kenya

The East African region offers massive potential for transport infrastructure expansion and investment, and with Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda having unveiled grand plans to build, enhance and expand their infrastructure both nationally and regionally that has helped to make them one the favoured destination for investments and transformation in the East African Community (EAC).

East Africa is in need for a good transport infrastructure system that links to stimulate economic growth and to create job opportunities which in turn calls for an increased role of the private sector. However, the region’s ongoing efforts to increase intra-regional trade, through the strengthening of the East African Community (EAC) regional trading bloc, have attracted the attention of private investors and international lenders, triggering a high demand for efficient and sustainable transportation systems.

The 2nd Annual East Africa Transport & Infrastructure Projects 2015 conference agenda will focus on the regions rail and infrastructure development and the topics will cover Policy and Regulation, Investment and Funding, Engineering and Design, New Technology, Viable Solutions and Operations.

18 July – Mandela Day, Global

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead” – Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela International Day was launched in recognition of Nelson Mandela’s birthday on 18 July, 2009 via unanimous decision of the UN General Assembly. It was inspired by a call Nelson Mandela made a year earlier, for the next generation to take on the burden of leadership in addressing the world’s social injustices when he said that “it is in your hands now”

It is more than a celebration of Madiba’s life and legacy. It is a global movement to honour his life’s work and act to change the world for the better. It was Nelson Mandela’s humble humanitarian philosophy and how he sought to live it every day that made him one of the most inspiring leaders in the world – free yourself, free others and serve every day.

Madiba believed that every person has the ability to change the world for the better, no matter how big or small their contribution. In his twilight years, he encouraged all of us to carry his life’s work forward when he famously said: “It is in your hands now …” In honouring Madiba’s legacy, the Nelson Mandela Foundation asks that you create or join an action on the Mandela Day website, share your story with the world, and help inspire global change.

The hashtags for Mandela Day are #Time2Serve and #MandelaDay. The website,www.mandeladay.com has all the resources you need to choose a meaningful action in memory of Nelson Mandela.

Hosted by Rt Hon Lord Paul Boateng, the UnConference will feature contributions from high-level figures and organisations at the heart of Africa’s science agenda, including a number of African Governments, senior business executives, leading academics and international organisations such as UNECA, the World Bank and the African Union.

Alongside the panel sessions, there is a strong focus on collaboration and interaction, brought about through interactive workshops, table groups and open networking spaces, all taking place simultaneously around the venue. While the issues covered will be fairly broad - from investment in research and development to capacity building for African academics and scientists - there will be a specific focus on the future relationship between industry and scientific and technological innovation in Africa.
