8 March – Launch of WWEB (Women into Work, Education & Business), Luton

20-24 March, Nantwich Jazz and Blues Music Festival

This year sees the 12th Nantwich Jazz, Blues & Music Festival, featuring The Hamsters, Flight 505, The Big Chris Barber Band, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, King Pleasure & The Biscuit Boys, and Vavoom. Most events for this weekend festival take place at Nantwich Civic Hall, but there are other smaller gigs taking place at various venues, such as the Crown Hotel, the White Horse, the Red Cow, and McCormicks. To 30 March 2008 - Education through Film Programme

The 100 Black Men of London, founded by Ken Barnes in 2001, is a registered charity dedicated to education, mentoring, economic development, health and well being. In order to educate the community about its history, the 100BMOL hire venues and present educational films/events which are relevant to the African experience. Such events take place at least once a month in the London area. All people are welcome especially children, community groups and refugees. The events are a valuable resource for Key Stages 2-4 (7-16 years) of the National or African curriculum. 29th March - The Sybil Phoenix Story Plus The Getty Archimedes Story, Bernie Grant Arts Centre, London

In association with Images of Black Women Festival. This film by Lucia Tanmbini contains interviews with Sybil Phoenix, family and friends. The rare footage shows how bad racism was in the 80’s and how much we take for granted now. Getty Archimede, from Guadelope, was the first black woman to become a lawyer in France (1939). She became the first deputy parliamentarian in 1946. She fought tirelessly for women and the poor. This historical documentary by Mariette Monpierre will show the similarities and differences between black women’s fight against racism in France and the UK. 5-8 pm.

30 March – The Shirley Chisholm Story, Imperial War Museum, London

The first black person to run for President was Shirley Chisholm in 1972. Chisholm was the Garveyite daughter of Guyanese and Barbadian immigrants. After becoming the first black Congresswoman, she ran for the highest office just 4 years after King was gunned down.  www.iwm.org.uk
